What Your Coverage Actually Pays For
Most people injured in a collision or at work in Alberta can start physiotherapy without paying up front. The two systems work differently, so here is what applies to you.
Section B accident benefits
Every Alberta auto policy carries Section B accident benefits, and they apply no matter who caused the collision. Treatment for sprains, strains, and whiplash-associated disorder is governed by the province’s Diagnostic and Treatment Protocols.
- Get assessed within 10 days of the collision to access treatment under the protocols
- Pre-approved visits without waiting on the insurer: up to 10 for WAD I, up to 21 for WAD II
- Submit form AB-1, Notice of Loss and Proof of Claim, to your insurer
- We bill your insurer directly on approved claims
- You choose your own clinic. Your insurer cannot assign one to you
WCB Alberta claims
If you were hurt doing your job, the Workers’ Compensation Board covers the treatment needed to get you back to work safely. You do not need a doctor’s referral to start physiotherapy.
- Report the injury to your employer, who files the employer report
- Bring your claim number if you have one, or we can start without it
- We bill WCB directly on approved claims
- Treatment is built around the physical demands of your actual job
- We handle the progress reporting WCB requires
Coverage details reflect Alberta’s current accident benefits rules as of August 2026. Alberta’s care-first auto insurance system takes effect January 1, 2027 and will change how accident benefits are structured. Your insurer or the Government of Alberta can confirm what applies to your claim.
What To Do In The First 48 Hours
What you do immediately after an injury affects both your recovery and your claim. These are the steps that matter most.
After a car accident
- Report the collision to your insurer and ask them to open a Section B claim.
- Get assessed by a physiotherapist within 10 days, even if the pain feels manageable.
- Complete form AB-1 and return it to your insurer.
- Keep moving gently. Prolonged rest and collars slow whiplash recovery.
- Write down your symptoms as they change. Stiffness and headaches often appear on day two or three.
After a workplace injury
- Tell your supervisor and make sure the injury is recorded that day.
- Confirm your employer has filed their report with WCB.
- Book a physiotherapy assessment. You do not need to wait for claim approval.
- Note the exact tasks and movements that caused the injury.
- Keep your employer updated on your restrictions so modified duties can be arranged.
Why Claim-Based Recovery Is Different
Treating a claim injury is not the same as treating a sore back. There is a second job running alongside the treatment.
The paperwork is part of the care
Insurers and WCB both need documented assessments, progress reports, and functional findings at set intervals. Missed reporting is one of the most common reasons coverage stalls, so we handle it as part of your treatment.
Recovery is measured against your real life
Being comfortable sitting still is not the goal. The target is the specific demands you need to meet, whether that is lifting on a job site, a full shift on your feet, or a commute without neck pain.
Timelines carry real consequences
The 10-day assessment window, the AB-1 deadline, and WCB reporting dates all affect what gets covered. We flag what is due and when so a deadline does not quietly cost you treatment.
Bring these to your first visit
- Photo ID and your Alberta Health card
- Your claim or policy number, if you have one
- Your insurer or WCB adjuster’s contact details
- The date the injury happened
- Any imaging or medical reports you already have
- Clothing you can move comfortably in
